At JWH Construction, we recently completed an extensive property renovation and house extension in Mackworth, Derbyshire. The homeowners wanted to update their existing space whilst adding a modern extension to increase their living area. This project involved significant structural changes and high-quality finishes, resulting in a stylish, functional new space that seamlessly blends with the original house.
The project began with the demolition of the existing conservatory and patio at the rear of the property. This initial stage was crucial to clear the area and prepare it for the new extension. With the old structures removed, we laid the groundwork for the extension, ensuring that the site was level and ready for the construction phase.
As the build advanced, a central door opening was created to provide easy access between the new extension and the main house. This doorway became a focal point in the design, offering a seamless connection between the old and new spaces. To support the new structure, reinforcement mesh was placed over the sub-floor, supported by carefully positioned chairs to maintain stability. With everything set, we proceeded to pour concrete, ensuring a strong base for the extension.
Once the foundation was complete, the walls began to rise, and the outline of the new space started to take shape. After constructing the walls and roof, we moved on to installing key structural elements such as the underfloor heating system. The heating pipes were precisely laid out across the floor area, providing an energy-efficient solution for keeping the new space warm and comfortable. We then poured a liquid screed finish over the underfloor heating, which not only provides a smooth, level surface but also achieves optimal heat distribution throughout the room.
With the structural work completed, the inside of the extension was ready for plaster boarding and first-fix installations, including electrics and plumbing. The smooth plastered walls and ceilings provided the perfect canvas for the finishing touches to be added.
One of the standout features of this house extension is the large skylight, which was carefully lifted over the house and placed into position. This modern addition floods the new space with natural light, creating a bright and airy atmosphere that makes the extension feel even more spacious. Once the skylight was secured, the roof was topped with powder-coated aluminium cappings to protect the parapet wall and enhance the contemporary look of the exterior.
Inside, the kitchen installation marked a major milestone of the project. The sleek, modern units were carefully positioned, creating a functional and visually pleasing layout. The bi-fold doors along the rear wall were the finishing touch, providing direct access to the garden and allowing the homeowners to enjoy a seamless indoor-outdoor living experience.
The completed renovation and house extension in Mackworth has transformed this property into a versatile and modern home, meeting the client’s requirements for additional living space and a stylish, open-plan kitchen. The careful attention to detail and use of high-quality materials means the new extension complements the original property well.
